Iran’s effort to keep trade moving while the Strait of Hormuz remains severely disrupted is running into a problem that cannot be solved simply by finding another road. Tehran has tried to redirect goods through neighboring countries, the Caspian Sea and emerging rail links, but the scale of the maritime disruption has exposed how deeply Iran’s economy depends on a narrow network of ports, roads, border crossings and shipping connections.
Recent reporting shows trucks carrying food, fuel and other goods facing long delays at crossings with Pakistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. Bureaucratic bottlenecks, inadequate facilities and higher transport charges have turned alternative land routes into expensive substitutes rather than practical replacements for normal maritime commerce. The Wall Street Journal reported that thousands of trucks and large quantities of goods have become trapped at borders, while Iran’s food inflation reached 128% in August. It estimated that the additional logistics burden could cost Iran about $18 billion a year.
The central difficulty is geography. Hormuz is not merely one shipping route among many. It is the maritime gateway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Indian Ocean. Before the conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil supply moved through the strait, making it difficult for any regional producer to replace its capacity quickly. Iran itself was exporting around 2 million barrels of crude a day before the U.S. blockade further restricted its seaborne trade.
Tehran has therefore looked inland. Road traffic can move toward Turkey, Pakistan and Central Asia, while the Caspian Sea offers another outlet for some commerce. Rail connections toward China and other Asian markets also hold strategic appeal. But each alternative has limits: rail networks have finite capacity, border procedures can be slow, roads are vulnerable to congestion, and goods that once traveled cheaply by sea become much more expensive when moved across several countries.
For ordinary consumers, that distinction matters. A country may technically possess an alternative route without possessing enough capacity to use it at the scale required. Moving thousands of containers by truck is not equivalent to moving them through a modern seaport. Perishable food can spoil while waiting at a border, industrial inputs can arrive late, and transport costs eventually filter into retail prices.
Oil presents an even harder problem. According to TankerTrackers data reported this month, Iranian crude exports have effectively disappeared from the main monitored maritime route, while Iranian production has fallen toward levels needed for domestic consumption and refining. At the same time, other regional producers have found limited ways to adapt, including ship-to-ship transfers and rerouting through alternative terminals. That contrast highlights Iran’s particular vulnerability: its own access to export markets has been squeezed at the same time that some competitors are managing to preserve parts of their international supply chains.
The crisis is also changing the economics of shipping. Reuters reported on September 17 that only three commercial vessels crossed Hormuz the previous day, compared with a 10-day average of 17. Some ships have attempted to reduce their visibility by switching off automatic identification systems, but such measures do not remove the underlying military and insurance risks.
The consequences extend well beyond Iran. When a major energy corridor becomes unreliable, buyers look farther afield. Longer voyages increase tanker demand, freight rates and fuel consumption. Reuters reported that daily rates for very large crude carriers have risen dramatically and that shipowners have ordered more than 217 such vessels in 2026, more than double last year’s total. The market is effectively paying for a world in which oil may have to travel much farther to reach consumers.
The pressure is particularly significant for Asian economies, which traditionally receive large volumes of Gulf energy. Higher crude and shipping costs can feed into gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, electricity and manufactured goods. Even countries that import little or no Iranian oil can feel the consequences because oil is traded in a global market.
Iran’s problem is therefore not simply that one route is blocked. It is that every substitute has a bottleneck of its own. A border can close. A pipeline can be attacked. A railway can run out of capacity. A tanker can become too expensive to insure. A neighboring state can impose new restrictions. The recent damage to Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, which normally provides an important route around Hormuz, is a reminder that infrastructure diversification does not eliminate geopolitical risk.
The wider strategic consequence may be more lasting than the immediate shortages. Governments and energy companies are being pushed to rethink what “secure supply” means. Stockpiles, pipelines, ports, railways, tanker fleets and alternative suppliers are increasingly being treated as parts of the same security system.
For Tehran, however, building alternatives will take years rather than weeks. New rail corridors require investment and coordination. Border infrastructure needs expansion. Oil exports require ships, insurance and secure access to international markets. None can be created at the speed of a political crisis.
That leaves Iran facing a difficult logistical equation. It can redirect some commerce, but replacing the scale and efficiency of Hormuz is another matter. The blockade has demonstrated that modern energy power depends not only on what a country produces, but also on whether it can move those resources reliably to the world.
As the confrontation continues, Iran’s attempts to bypass Hormuz are becoming a test of economic resilience. So far, the lesson is clear: alternative routes can soften a blockade, but they cannot easily reproduce the capacity, cost and connectivity of the maritime system they are meant to replace.
